Celebrating … our Highland Cows!
Our 8-acre Corn Maze (and huge Pumpkin Patch) have put Shelby Corn Maze on the map in Shelby, North Carolina every Fall! Our fans can’t wait to see what designs we will cut into the corn each year. This year’s maze design celebrates the Highland Cows that are now making their home at the farm.
Fun Facts about Highland Cows
- These are the oldest registered breed of cattle in the whole world, and their presence was first noted in the Outer Hebrides in the 6th century! Whew! That’s old!
- Their long wavy/wooly coats and distinctive horns are “pretty” — they are often referred to as “fluffy cows” and in Scotland: “Hairy Coos“.
- The most common color is red, but they can also be black, white, grey, tan or brindle.
- Queen Elizabeth II had a herd of Highland Cows of her own.
- Highland Cows have a reputation for being super-friendly. Docile, not aggressive, and affectionate towards people.
